This story was pretty expert, but there really wasn't much Christmas in information technology until the end which sort of bewitched me since its title has Christmas in it. There actually is no mention of the real meaning of Christmas. There is one mention of Simone hoping an angel ornamentation will protect her brother and friend in the fighting.

"The thing is, if in your life, you never got whatever bad news, never got weary, never got the wind knocked out of you lot, well, there would be nothing left in this world to move you. And there would be no reason at all to well upwards in a teary grin and concur on tight to everything y'all love. I know now that that's the whole signal. That'southward the whole point of everything."

There'due south a lot that Simone's story has going for it - musings on course relations and recognizing one'due south privilege as a member of the upper class, the struggle to preserve some sort of teenage girlhood while in a foreign country at war, and the complicated mix of emotions in bliss at the war being over and the grim realization that both she and her earth will never quite be the same.

For those who argue that Simone has no label and that her diary entries are lackluster, I disagree completely. She clashes with her grandmother and other "high order" women over their expectations of her. She isn't as radical equally her suffragist friend Francie, but Simone develops an agreement of women's empowerment through her experience as a "howdy daughter" switchboard operator. I related strongly to her anxieties over graduating loftier school and wanting to make a difference in the world without knowing what that deviation could be.

Equally far equally the diary entries go, earlier the war she couldn't observe the motivation to write and afterward the war she couldn't observe the time. She writes sporadically when she can, jotting down a few words in earlier she sleeps. She's working twelve hour shifts - she doesn't accept fourth dimension or energy to hammer out a dissertation every night. It's not realistic, especially when her days consist of the same monotonous and stress-inducing switchboards over and over again.

For those who criticize her love story with Sam and how quickly information technology progresses, I again take to disagree. She grew up hearing all almost how her mother and male parent roughshod in love at start sight, so it's merely natural that she would desire to find that same kind of heart-stopping honey for herself. The traumas that she and Sam experienced at state of war bind them together as much every bit sharing a dance, and in an unfamiliar world where you lot don't know if you are going to survive to see the adjacent mean solar day or not, you don't always have the luxury to take the time to fall in honey. Simone utilized her love for Sam (as well every bit her brother) as a mode to motivate herself and keep her focused on the importance of her work.

I finished the book in one sitting with tears in my eyes. Is the ending a lilliputian also saccharine? Perhaps. Does that actually matter? In that location are likewise many DA books with gross mischaracterizations of their subject matter for me to be bothered that Simone'due south biggest flaw is she gets a happy ending. /endrant

2018 Review:
This volume is office of the Honey America series, a middle grade historical fiction serial near and dear to my centre. I hope to review many Dear Americas in the future, but I'k excited that my first one happens to be one of my all-fourth dimension favorites!

When Christmas Comes Once more by Beth Seidel Levine is ane of the few (if not the but) Dear America about a seventeen-twelvemonth-old girl. Most of the Beloved America heroines are betwixt twelve and fourteen years old, and so you can imagine my excitement when I was finally the exact same historic period equally the main character. Therefore, Simone'due south questions about her time to come and her meaning in life are very relatable as I asked myself like questions at that historic period. Also, Simone's family is French and as I am French-Canadian, I loved the bits of French language and references throughout the diary.

I'll acknowledge I might be a niggling biased equally Earth War I is my favorite time period and this book happens to take place so, only ultimately, a good story is a good story. Simone, in wanting to make a difference, ends up signing on for a job that is more than she bargained for. Existence a Hi Daughter is not easy, but involves high-stress situations where her communications with Centrolineal soldiers not only have to be coded, only she must help them reach their goals in calling, if she can. Simone wonders if she's strong enough, but she doesn't take fourth dimension to determine whether she is or not because they need her—now. Sometimes it's not about having strength before a situation arises, but getting through the situation which then gives you strength. This story is rich in history and I loved learning well-nigh another side of World War I we don't often hear well-nigh.

At that place is romance, there is friendship, there is loneliness and there is heartache. Life lived during a war—any war—is often cruel and unfair. And questions are often left unanswered. But Simone pushes through it and when she returns abode, she is fabricated dissimilar past her experiences. She can never return to the sweet, innocent New York gal she once was, but she would never go back. Ane of my favorite quotes from the book perfectly reflects this thought:

"The thing is, if in your life, yous never got any bad news, never got weary, never got the wind knocked out of y'all, well, there would be zippo left in this world to move y'all. And there would be no reason at all to well up in a teary grinning and hold on tight to everything you love. I know now that that's the whole point. That's the whole point to everything."

If that didn't just give you chills, there's zippo more I tin do.

I give When Christmas Comes Over again 5 out of 5 stars. It's geared toward middle form readers, simply just as entertaining and educational for high schoolers and across. While the story does not entirely heart around Christmas time, it begins and ends with Christmas. Considering Christmas marks a time for families to be together—happy, content and at peace. There was no peace for the Spencer family unit in 1917 and although Earth War I had changed them greatly, they had peace in Christmas of 1918. This demonstrates that while we may not have peace now, we can await forward to the peace to come up.

When Full general John J. Pershing calls for young women to join his ranks to operate switchboards, Simone is thrilled, and when the ages are lowered, she immediately starts training. That'due south when the real action begins.

This book weaved humor, anger, happiness, and sorrow so well. Simone's own perspective, her losses, her fury, her happiness, her sadness, they were written beautifully. I have a bright imagination, and the words brought it to life.

Though the catastrophe was bittersweet, equally told, even Simone didn't wish anything differently. If her grief, if sad things had non happened, if her life had not e'er been sorrow filled, so in the terminate, she wouldn't exist able to exist truly appreciate the joy that came in the stop.

The war continues and Simone and the other girls she works with face many hardships. This book gives a perspective on Earth War I that many people would non think of, since she was a girl involved in the state of war.

This book likewise gives adept descriptions of Simone'south interest in the war without beingness as well graphic for younger readers. I would say that this book could take moved a little faster in the beginning, considering to me it seemed a little dull until Simone went overseas. I really enjoyed this book, information technology gave a girl's perspective of being in World War I, which is non really a common occurrence. I as well recollect it gave enough details yet was vague enough that even upper elementary students can enjoy and learn from the book.

I would recommend this volume for students to read independently for 5th or sixth grade. To use this book for a read aloud, I would recommend quaternary or fifth grades.
